Yeah. That's right.  Halloween (All Hallows Eve) will soon be upon us.  Two traditions are worth mentioning here.

Samhain is the Celtic festival on the evening of October 31st.  I understand that some of it was meant to celebrate the harvest and to honor the dead.  The belief is that the boundary between the living and the dead at this time of year became blurred.  The belief was also that the ghosts of the dead wandered the earth, sometimes causing trouble or damaging crops.  Their presence was said made it easier for the Druids to make predictions about the future.

The Druids built huge sacred bonfires.  The people would gather there to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to their deities.  The Celts would often wear costumes made of animal heads and skins.

All Hallows was first observed on May 13th in 609 or 610 AD and later the date was changed to November 1st.  The thing to bear in mind is at that time, the day was measured starting at sunset, so it deed in fact begin on the evening of October 31st.  It's a time chosen to honor all of the saints, also known as All Saints Day.

After saying all this, I wonder if I should I light a candle or a bonfire?
