Candy Canes Candy Canes were originally a simple white stick of sugar. It had no hooked shape, stripes, or pepermint flavor. Tradition says that the first hooked shaped canes when made by a choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in Germany in 1670.He gave them to children at church services. The shape was meant to represent a shepard's hook. The red stripes and pepermint flavor did not seem to appear until roughly the begining of the twentieth century.
